Dog Advice – Home alone dogs
From our point of view, our home may be ideal having plush rugs, elegant furniture, and chic décor, but our dogs do not appreciate such environmental refinement and would by far prefer to be socializing with people or other dogs, or chasing a blowing leaf outside.
When you leave your dog alone, you should try and make the environment interesting so that the dog does not get bored. Here are few things that you can try -
Do not create a scene before you leave -
You should not make a big emotional affair when you leave and come home. Spend time with your dog before you leave in the morning. When you get home wait for about 5 minutes before acknowledging him.
You should not leave your dog out and do not let him have the run of the house especially if he is a young. A bored dog is a destructive dog and one that can harm himself by chewing or swallowing dangerous objects.
Provide him his favourite bedding & toy in his crate or the room where you leave him during the day as he needs a comfortable place to nap during the day.
You may leave a toy filled with pieces of treat. The dog may happily spend the afternoon trying to get the treat. You can be as creative as possible.
A quiet house for hours on end is a dead place for your dog. You can leave the radio, TV or CD player on. Some owners tape their own voices and leave that playing all day. You may want to play classical music. Just take care it is soothing music.
