How much to feed your dog

Dog owner often ask how much should I to feed my dog ?

The answer to this is simple - Your dog should be fed enough to satisfy his energy needs, but no more, otherwise he will put on excess weight.
The amount of energy is not only dependent on the activity of the dog but also the metabolic rate.

Dog’s energy requirements do not increase in proportion with the body weight – larger the dog, less energy per kilogram of body weight is required e.g. a Chihuahua weighing 2 kgs need about 230 Kcal per day, where as a Labrador weighing 30 kgs (15 times in weight) needs 1700Kcal – which is only 7 times.

If your dog is active with healthy coat and maintains proper weight- it is almost certainly getting an adequate diet. On the other hand if the skin is scaly, shedding hair, dull coat is excessively hungry or disinterested in food, you can know that there is some problem with his diet and you must consult a vet.
Excessive feeding can lead to obese dogs. You must not feed household scraps in between meal to your dog. Feeding times should be kept constant in order to give a healthy lifestyle to your dog.
