Hounds are one of the oldest of the dog lineages. They can be broadly classified into Scent Hounds and sight hounds.
Sight Hounds
- They have a long and narrow nose and with an athletic build body.
They have great sprinting abilities and able to achieve blistering speeds upto 56 Kmph, over short distances. - Sight hound, as the name suggests have a very accurate vision and can spot activity from a considerable distance.
- They form a strong bond with the owners and require less amount of exercise as compared with scent hounds.
- Some of the sight hound breeds –Grey hound, Afghan Hound, Saluki, Borzoi.
Scent Hounds
- These are muscular dogs with a considerable amount of stamina.
- They have broader nose for a great scenting ability but they lack the blistering pace of sigh Hounds.
- Scent hound are good social dogs and are well suited for family living. They are extroverts by nature and do well with people around and are well behaved with children.
- They have a very strong instinct to follow scent, which can be a difficulty at the time and training and can cause a problem later for the owner.
- They have tendency to live in packs and are therefore very tolerant of other dogs. Living in packs has also made them greedy and they tend to overeat on any chance provided and are prone to obesity.
- Some of the sight hound breeds – Basset Hound, Beagle, Blood Hound.
