Dog – Anemia
Anemia is not a disease but a condition that refers to a low red blood cell count and/or low hemoglobin.
Symptoms
- Pale gums
- Low stamina .i.e. the dog/puppy gets tired very easily
- Lethargy
- Fast pulse
- Weakness
Causes
- Parasites (worms)
- Chronic Blood Loss
- Poor Nutrition
What to do?
- Check for parasites as puppies and kittens are highly susceptible to hookworms, other types of worms, and even fleas that suck their blood causing severe anaemia.
- Certain types of medications can cause anemia so make sure you ask your vet about any medications you maybe giving your pet. Some drugs may cause the immune system to attack itself or healthy blood cells, which will reduce the ability for oxygen to flow through the blood cells causing anemia.
- Feed them foods that are rich in protein and iron, such as liver.
- Supplementing the diet with vitamin B & iron.
- Give the pet some quiet time.
