Dogs at times show a distinctive facial gesture, which looks very much like a smile. The lips are drawn back, without showing any teeth, since this would mean a sign of aggression.
This is actually a gesture of appeasement and can be called a smile.
You may see your dog smiling when he has behaved as you have asked him to. The smile is normally followed by a yawn, which is dog’s way of relieving the tension in any situation.
