Dog Behavior – Chewing

Dog Behavior – Chewing
My dog chews up anything and everything that comes his way, he spares nothing neither my socks not the furniture legs.
I used to think that this is due to teething and ignore it but with time it become an annoying habit.
I then decided to nip the problem and succeeded. :)
Here are the tips that I would like to share –
You must understand the cause of chewing and try to mitigate it. The causes can be –
Teething, Boredom or loneliness, Fear, Anxiety or lack of attention.

Measure that you can take to handle the problem
1. Do not encourage chewing as the dog may form a habit and then it will be difficult to handle.
2. You can try some bitter sprays on the item or object that the dog is most likely to chew. Several products are available in the markets like – cedar apple spray, cayenne pepper that will serve the purpose.
3. Whenever you catch your dog chewing an unacceptable item, stop him immediately by a strict “NO!” Keep in mind the timing should be correct.
4. Provide some sort of obedience training to your dog as this will help in disciplining him and provide him mental stimulation.
5. Make sure you take him out for walks and he get enough exercise to prevent chewing caused by anxiety, boredom and lack of attention.
6. You must give him some toys to chew so that if he wants to chew he is not deprived. This is in fact healthy for the dog.

Observing all the point mentioned above I was able to tackle chewing problem of my dog. Now he only chews his toys and nothing beyond that!
